Weekly Address: President Obama Says House Must Pass Bipartisan Transportation Bill
President Obama is calling on the House of Representatives to pass a bipartisan transportation bill that would repair crumbling roads and bridges and support construction jobs in communities all across America.
To mark the second anniversary of Obamacare, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) delivers the Weekly Republican Address, calling for repeal and replacement of the Democrats' health care law. On the eve of next week's historic Supreme Court arguments on the constitutionality of the law, McConnell says it's time to replace Obamacare with common-sense reforms Americans want, reforms that lower costs and which put health care back in the hands of individuals and their doctors, rather than Washington bureaucrats.
Senate Minority Leader McConnell called on conservatives to stay devoted to their principles. He talked about campaign finance and his belief that previously enacted legislation was unconstitutional. He said that he would use the same legal tactics used in the Citizens United v. FEC to fight health care legislation.
Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell comments Monday regarding a ruling in the U.S. District for the Northern District of Florida that the Democrats' health spending bill is 'unconstitutional' and exceeds the bounds of Congressional authority:
Weekly Address: New START Treaty "Fundamental" to Security
The President says ratifying the New START, a pivotal treaty with Russia on nuclear weapons, must happen this year. He explains that failure to ratify the treaty this year would not only mean losing our nuclear inspectors in Russia, but also undermine the international coalition pressuring Iran, put at risk the transit routes used to equip our troops in Afghanistan, and undo decades American leadership and bipartisanship on nuclear security.
Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell Delivers the Weekly GOP Address
In the Weekly Republican Address, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell says, "The American people delivered a clear verdict on [the stimulus] and other failed experiments in the government-as-economic-stimulator on Election Day. But Democratic leaders in Washington continue to act as if nothing has changed, including their priorities."
He points out, "The top priority of most Americans is to create jobs and get the economy moving. And the single best thing we could do in Washington to achieve that goal is to prevent a tax hike that's about to hit every taxpayer and hundreds of thousands of small businesses at the stroke of Midnight on December 31st."
Leader McConnell explains, "Americans don't think we should be raising taxes on anybody, especially in the middle of a recession. But instead of giving Americans what they want, Democratic leaders plan to use the last few days that lawmakers expect to spend in Washington this year focusing on everything except preventing this tax hike, which will cost us even more jobs: ...Immigration...A repeal of the 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' ...A reorganization of the FDA ... More environmental regulations... Democrats put off all these things until after the election, along with the most basic task of funding the government. By focusing on them now, and not on legislation to promote job creation and reduce spending, they're showing where their priorities lie."
