Weekly Addresses - 4-23-11

Stopping Oil Market Fraud, Beginning a Clean Energy Future

The President lays out his plans to address rising gas prices over the short and the long term, from a new task force to root out fraud and manipulation in the oil markets to investments in a clean energy economy.

Sen. Mike Johanns (R-NE) Delivers Weekly GOP Address On Small Businesses

In the Weekly Republican Address, Sen. Mike Johanns of Nebraska explains, ""The idea of government creating jobs; well, it simply misses the point entirely. That's just not how we get our economic engine firing on all cylinders. Job creation in this country doesn't start with government; it starts with our businesses, especially our small businesses. Small businesses create between 60 and 80 percent of all new jobs, according to the Small Business Administration."

Sen. Johanns points out that the policies of the Obama administration have made it more difficult for small businesses to create jobs, such as the 1099 tax reporting mandate included in the Democrats' health care law.

He says, "Job creators found themselves saddled with a mountain of costly new paperwork due to this part of the health care law. Repealing it opened the door to hiring by closing the door on new accounting red tape that businesses would have faced. Since then, I've heard directly from small business owners, thanking us for removing this stumbling block to growth, for saving them time and money, and for getting big government out of the way of small business."

"1099 repeal was a big victory for our small businesses and our economy, but there's so much more to do," Sen. Johanns says. "The red tape and the bureaucracy continue to pile up from this Administration. . . . [President Obama's] his Administration has proposed or enacted more than 250 regulations amounting to more than $24 billion dollars in regulatory costs. And again, that's just since January."

He concludes, "It is time to change the culture in Washington. We can't tie up small businesses in needless red tape and regulations and then expect them to create jobs and boost the economy. The federal government can't create jobs; we must help shape an economic environment conducive to job creation. It's our task to unshackle job creators from regulations and mandates, to enable them to grow, to flourish. My Republican colleagues and I will continue to push for a scaled back government that allows the enterprising American spirit to create a prosperous economy that benefits everyone. That means reining in spending, reducing the deficit, eliminating red tape that holds businesses back."

Weekly Addresses 4/16/11

America's Fiscal Future

The President discusses his plan for our fiscal future. It is a comprehensive and balanced approach to achieve $4 trillion in deficit reduction over twelve years, based on the values of shared responsibility and shared prosperity.

Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) Delivers Weekly GOP Address On The Debt Crisis

In the Weekly Republican Address, Sen. Tom Coburn, MD, of Oklahoma discusses the historic spending cuts Republicans passed this week and the problems with President Obama's approach to spending and debt.

Sen. Coburn says, "This was a historic week in Washington. For the first time in more than 15 years, Congress, under the leadership of House Republicans, is making significant spending cuts. While these cuts aren't nearly enough, the American people should be encouraged. You have fundamentally changed the debate in Washington. Instead of increasing spending, Congress is now cutting spending. That is a monumental shift for Washington."

In response to President Obama's speech, Sen. Coburn says, "Unfortunately, the president failed to put a serious proposal on the table... Entitlement spending alone accounts for more than 80 percent of our long-term debt burden but the president's plan exempts these programs from reform. By pretending that Medicare and Medicaid and Social Security are sound financially when they are not, the president is jeopardizing the benefits for the very Americans he says he wants to protect. He also proposed expanding his failed health care law that will cost Americans now over $2.6 trillion between now and the next 10 years. That makes our debt problem much more difficult to solve. The president wants to strengthen a board of unaccountable Medical Czars and give them more power to impose price controls and ration care."

In contrast, Sen. Coburn points out, "House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, who seemed to be the real target of the president's speech, has charted a different course. His plan, which saves $6.2 trillion over ten years, outlines a path to prosperity, not austerity. He would save Medicare by giving all beneficiaries, beginning with those now under 55, access to high-quality health plans, similar to the plans that members of Congress enjoy. Also under Mr. Ryan's plan, Medicaid's safety net for the poorest patients would be strengthened by transitioning to block grants that empower states to provide care."

House Republicans Respond to President's Deficit Speech

House Republicans are committed to cutting spending and helping grow our economy for better job creation in America. The President's speech on the deficit was more about his campaign than creating jobs and ending reckless government spending. It's time for true leadership to save our future generations from crippling debt.

Weekly Addresses 4/9/11

President Obama on the Budget Compromise to Avoid a Government Shutdown

The President discusses the importance of the bipartisan budget agreement that represents both a significant investment in the United States' future - and the largest annual spending cut in our history.

Weekly Republican Address 4/9/11: Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI)

In this week's address, House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI) highlights the Path to Prosperity, the Republican budget that would spur private-sector job growth, stop Washington from spending money it doesn't have, and lift the crushing burden of debt that threatens our future. Ryan also highlights the bipartisan agreement reached this week on the largest spending cut in history -- "good news for job creators in America."

Weekly Addresses - 4/2/11

Weekly Address: Gas Prices & Energy Security

Speaking from a UPS customer center as part of the new public-private Green Fleet Partnership, the President discusses his Blueprint for a Secure Energy Future to help free us from oil and boost the American economy.

Weekly Republican Address 4/2/11: Speaker Boehner on Cutting Spending & Creating Jobs

Delivering the Weekly Republican Address, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) discusses the new House majority's efforts to cut spending and tackle the big challenges facing job creation in America. In the address, Boehner, a former small business owner, talks about how the spending binge in Washington is creating uncertainty for private-sector job creators and holding our economy back. He reiterates Republicans' commitment to fighting for the largest spending cuts possible, and says it's important to resolve last year's budget mess so we can tackle the bigger challenges facing job creation. Those challenges include the job-crushing $1.5 trillion tax hike in President Obama's budget for next year, and his request for an increase in the national debt limit without a commitment to ending runaway spending.

Weekly Addresses - 3/26/11

The Military Mission in Libya

The President says that thanks to our men and women in uniform, the military mission in Libya is succeeding even as responsibility is transferred to our NATO allies and partners.

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell Delivers Weekly GOP Address Health Care

In the Weekly Republican Address, Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell marks the unfortunate one year anniversary of the passage of Democrats' unpopular health care bill and discusses the burdens it places on states.

Gov. McDonnell says, "Unlike states, families, and businesses, the federal government doesn't have to balance its budget. And that unfortunate reality leads to policies like the federal health care bill that push expensive, unfunded, and unsustainable programs onto the rest of us. Washington passes the law, and then expects us to balance the books."

He explains, "The law shifts billions in unfunded mandates onto state governments, and rigid new requirements restrict the governors' abilities to manage our state programs. The result: higher costs, less innovation and freedom. That's a prescription for serious problems at the state level, where much of this plan must be implemented. Most notably, the federal health care bill dramatically expands Medicaid, which was already growing at unsustainable rates."

And, Gov. McDonnell adds, "The federal health care bill is not only a budget buster, it's also unconstitutional. Virginia, like the majority of states, is challenging this legislation in court. Already a federal District Court judge has ruled in our favor, concluding that the provision that a Virginia citizen must purchase insurance or face a penalty is unconstitutional.... The legal issues must be settled promptly by the [Supreme] Court to create certainty and finality for health care providers, businesses and all Americans. Shockingly, the Obama Administration opposes an expedited appeal to the Supreme Court, preferring the potential for years of costly litigation in the lower courts."

He concludes, "We need policies that give greater freedom to citizens and employers and don't overly burden states and businesses. Policies that recognizes what history teaches well: and that is that the creative solutions of the free market beat one-size fits all plans of big government. Here in your state capitols, Republican Governors are leading the effort to cut government spending, keep taxes low, help the private sector create jobs, provide access to affordable health care and get our economy back on track by making our states more competitive. We are asking this Administration to join us in the effort."
