Weekly Addresses 8-4-12

Celebrating the Summer Olympics and Paralympics

President Obama congratulates all of the American athletes competing in the Olympics and Paralympics this summer. These men and women have inspired us all with their hard work, determination, and their indomitable spirit as they present the best of America to the rest of the world. The President tells our Olympic and Paralympic competitors that the American people could not be prouder of them, and thanks them for reminding us that we are one people, and by working together we can achieve great things.

Weekly Republican Address 8/4/12: Majority Leader Eric Cantor

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) delivered this week's address on the House's recent action to stop the tax hike and roll back burdensome regulations on America's small businesses. National unemployment has remained above 8% for 42 consecutive months under the current administration. Now is not the time to raise taxes on anyone.

Weekly Addresses 7/7/12

Pushing Congress to Create Jobs, Keep College in Reach for Middle Class

President Obama discusses legislation he signed on Friday that does two important things: It keeps thousands of construction workers on the job rebuilding our crumbling infrastructure, and it stops interest rates on federal loans from doubling this year for more than seven million students.

Weekly Republican Address 7/7/12: Rep. Ann Marie Buerkle (R-NY)

In this week's address, Rep. Ann Marie Buerkle (R-NY) discusses the U.S. House of Representatives' upcoming vote to repeal the president's health care law in its entirety. The law is driving up costs and making it harder for small businesses to hire new workers. As we've seen with the latest jobs report, national unemployment has been at or above 8% for 41 consecutive months. That is why House Republicans have a plan for America's Job Creators. House Republicans have passed more than 30 bipartisan jobs bills that are stuck in the Democrat-controlled U.S. Senate. Check them out here: http://majorityleader.gov/jobstracker

Weekly Addresses 6-30-2012

An All-Hands-On-Deck Approach to Fighting the Colorado Wildfires

President Obama speaks to the American people from Colorado, where he toured areas impacted by the devastating Waldo Canyon fire, met with affected families, and thanked firefighters, first responders, and volunteers.

Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY) Delivers Weekly GOP Address On The Need To Repeal

In the Weekly Republican Address, U.S. Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyoming) calls for full repeal of Obamacare following the Supreme Court's decision this week to uphold the President's health law. A doctor who has practiced medicine for 25 years, Sen. Barrasso says the Court's ruling did nothing to improve the failed health care law: "It remains unworkable, unaffordable, and very unpopular." Sen. Barrasso says congressional Republicans are committed to repealing Obamacare and replacing it with health care reform that ensures Americans "get the care they need, from the doctor they choose, at a lower cost."

Weekly Addresses 6-23-2012

Congress Must Act on Transportation Bill and Student Loans

President Obama discusses the urgent need for Congress to act now on two common sense measures to help middle class families: preventing interest rates on federal student loans from going up and putting hundreds of thousands of construction workers back on the job.

Weekly Republican Address 6/23/12: Rep. Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA)

In this week's address, Rep. Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) discusses House Republicans' focus on jobs and fully repealing the president's health care law. The law makes it difficult for small businesses to expand and hire new workers, it drives up health care costs, and it's making our economy worse. After the Supreme Court's decision, House Republicans will work to implement reforms that give the power of choice and control to the patient--not government bureaucracy.

Weekly Addresses 6-16-2012

Ending the Stalemate in Washington

President Obama tells the American people that the stalemate in Washington is holding our economy back during this make-or-break moment for the middle class.

Gov. Scott Walker (R-WI) Delivers Weekly GOP Address On Tackling America's Problems

In the Weekly Republican Address, Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker calls for getting America's "fiscal house on track and...our economy back in order" saying that "more big government is not the answer as the President contends. Instead, we need to confront the powerful special interests in Washington and put the hard working taxpayers back in charge of our government." Furthermore, Governor Walker says, "we need to think more about the next generation than we do about the next election."

Weekly Addresses - 4-23-11

Stopping Oil Market Fraud, Beginning a Clean Energy Future

The President lays out his plans to address rising gas prices over the short and the long term, from a new task force to root out fraud and manipulation in the oil markets to investments in a clean energy economy.

Sen. Mike Johanns (R-NE) Delivers Weekly GOP Address On Small Businesses

In the Weekly Republican Address, Sen. Mike Johanns of Nebraska explains, ""The idea of government creating jobs; well, it simply misses the point entirely. That's just not how we get our economic engine firing on all cylinders. Job creation in this country doesn't start with government; it starts with our businesses, especially our small businesses. Small businesses create between 60 and 80 percent of all new jobs, according to the Small Business Administration."

Sen. Johanns points out that the policies of the Obama administration have made it more difficult for small businesses to create jobs, such as the 1099 tax reporting mandate included in the Democrats' health care law.

He says, "Job creators found themselves saddled with a mountain of costly new paperwork due to this part of the health care law. Repealing it opened the door to hiring by closing the door on new accounting red tape that businesses would have faced. Since then, I've heard directly from small business owners, thanking us for removing this stumbling block to growth, for saving them time and money, and for getting big government out of the way of small business."

"1099 repeal was a big victory for our small businesses and our economy, but there's so much more to do," Sen. Johanns says. "The red tape and the bureaucracy continue to pile up from this Administration. . . . [President Obama's] his Administration has proposed or enacted more than 250 regulations amounting to more than $24 billion dollars in regulatory costs. And again, that's just since January."

He concludes, "It is time to change the culture in Washington. We can't tie up small businesses in needless red tape and regulations and then expect them to create jobs and boost the economy. The federal government can't create jobs; we must help shape an economic environment conducive to job creation. It's our task to unshackle job creators from regulations and mandates, to enable them to grow, to flourish. My Republican colleagues and I will continue to push for a scaled back government that allows the enterprising American spirit to create a prosperous economy that benefits everyone. That means reining in spending, reducing the deficit, eliminating red tape that holds businesses back."

Weekly Addresses 4/16/11

America's Fiscal Future

The President discusses his plan for our fiscal future. It is a comprehensive and balanced approach to achieve $4 trillion in deficit reduction over twelve years, based on the values of shared responsibility and shared prosperity.

Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) Delivers Weekly GOP Address On The Debt Crisis

In the Weekly Republican Address, Sen. Tom Coburn, MD, of Oklahoma discusses the historic spending cuts Republicans passed this week and the problems with President Obama's approach to spending and debt.

Sen. Coburn says, "This was a historic week in Washington. For the first time in more than 15 years, Congress, under the leadership of House Republicans, is making significant spending cuts. While these cuts aren't nearly enough, the American people should be encouraged. You have fundamentally changed the debate in Washington. Instead of increasing spending, Congress is now cutting spending. That is a monumental shift for Washington."

In response to President Obama's speech, Sen. Coburn says, "Unfortunately, the president failed to put a serious proposal on the table... Entitlement spending alone accounts for more than 80 percent of our long-term debt burden but the president's plan exempts these programs from reform. By pretending that Medicare and Medicaid and Social Security are sound financially when they are not, the president is jeopardizing the benefits for the very Americans he says he wants to protect. He also proposed expanding his failed health care law that will cost Americans now over $2.6 trillion between now and the next 10 years. That makes our debt problem much more difficult to solve. The president wants to strengthen a board of unaccountable Medical Czars and give them more power to impose price controls and ration care."

In contrast, Sen. Coburn points out, "House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, who seemed to be the real target of the president's speech, has charted a different course. His plan, which saves $6.2 trillion over ten years, outlines a path to prosperity, not austerity. He would save Medicare by giving all beneficiaries, beginning with those now under 55, access to high-quality health plans, similar to the plans that members of Congress enjoy. Also under Mr. Ryan's plan, Medicaid's safety net for the poorest patients would be strengthened by transitioning to block grants that empower states to provide care."
